Visual Arts

"Everything in life is art"

The visual arts provide knowledge about God’s world and ways of experiencing it that are unique and different from that gained through spoken or written word. Art is a universal language through which we can express our common aspirations, and a channel to understand and appreciate the cultural and religious heritage of others, as well as our own.

Whether it is a pencil to paper or paint to canvas, through a camera lens, or performing on stage, I never get tired of living life through art. The art classes offered here at Dock are a godsend.

EC - Grade 8 Visual Arts Content

All students in grades Early Childhood through grade 8 are given ample opportunities to explore art by creating with their own hands and studying art history. From cave painting to contemporary art, students have experiences studying art from all parts of the globe. Our curriculum is designed to encourage exploration, creative expression, and curiosity. Every student is featured in our school's annual art show each spring.

High School Visual Arts Offerings

For a small school, Dock not only offers a wide range of art classes in high school, but a breathtakingly beautiful campus to serve as backdrop, subject and inspiration for your art. Below is a list of courses offered for students in grades 9-12.

Fraktur Art Passed on to Next Generation

Congratulations to all our young artists that had Fraktur Art on display at the Mennonite Heritage Center last spring.

Dock alum Emily Smucker-Beidler (’83) visited elementary students in Mrs. Kim Bergey’s ('97) Art class to teach about Fraktur and how to create their own work. Emily was first introduced to Fraktur art when she was a young student at Dock and is excited to pass on the tradition to another generation.
